Go Buy the Book

In an effort to bring more diverse events to the Theatre, two book-related events occurred at the Orpheum in November.

On November 17, Rainn Wilson, well known for his role on TV’s “The Office”, appeared at the Theatre to promote his book, ”The Bassoon King”. Then three days later, Chilean-American author Isabel Allende visited to promote her 21st book, “The Japanese Lover.” Both events were held under the aegis of Changing Hands Bookstore. Over 1,000 people attended these events.

This is just one example of the type of events that FOTOT is looking to bring to the Orpheum. In the new year we hope to bring some jazz performers to play in the Theatre. Stay tuned!

Finally, let me wish you all Happy Hanukkah. Merry Christmas, and the best for the New Year.

This was the first performance by the dance troupe from the Gene Bumph Dance School. On a number of occasions during the 1930’s his students (aged from 6-17) would perform at the Orpheum. These recitals were well attended by friends and relatives, and drew positive reviews from the papers, using words like “fun”, “exciting”, and “spectacular.”

Attention Fry’s Shoppers – Donate to the Friends every time you shop at Fry’s, and it’s free. Fry’s is donating $2 million a year ($500,000/quarter) to Arizona non-profits. To participate, go to www.FrysCommunityRewards.com and register your Fry’s VIP card, and select Friends of the Orpheum Theatre as your non-profit of choice. Remember: your donation is free, and this program is separate from the gas program. Last year, the Friends received nearly $700 from Fry’s. Also: if you are already a member of the Program you have to re-register in August. Just go to the e-mail location shown above and follow the directions to re-enroll.

Give Kids a Boost – It’s often difficult for young children to see what’s happening on stage because they are “vertically challenged.” Now you can help the Friends solve this problem by purchasing a booster seat. The purchase price is $25, and each seat purchased will be labelled with the name of the purchaser. Visit our website, www.friendsoftheorpheumtheatre.org for more information.
